  1. A branch of philosophy that deals with first
  2. principles, in particular `being' (ontology)
  3. and `knowing' (epistemology), and that is
  4. concerned with the ultimate nature of
  5. reality. It has been maintained that no
  6. certain knowledge of metaphysical questions
  7. is possible. Epistemology, or the study of
  8. how we know, lies at the threshold of the
  9. subject. Metaphysics is concerned with the
  10. nature and origin of existence and of mind,
  11. the interaction between them, the meaning of
  12. time and space, causation, determinism and
  13. free will, personality and the self,
  14. arguments for belief in God, and human
  15. immortality. The foundations of metaphysics
  16. were laid by Plato and Aristotle. St Thomas
  17. Aquinas, basing himself on Aristotle,
  18. produced a metaphysical structure that is
  19. accepted by the Catholic church. The subject
  20. has been advanced by Descartes, Spinoza,
  21. Leibniz, Berkeley, Hume, Locke, Kant, Hegel,
  22. Schopenhauer, and Marx; and in the 20th
  23. century by Bergson, Bradley, Croce,
  24. McTaggart, Whitehead, and Wittgenstein.
